Maryon Attwood - Biography
Maryon Attwood is a studio artist living and working near Coupeville, WA on Whidbey Island. Her formal training includes instruction in a classic liberal arts college program and study with individual studio artists.
Maryon's oven-to-table ceramic platters are made from specially formulated clay that withstands thermal shock and can be used safely in the oven as well as for serving and presentation.
Her interest in producing oven-to-table platters comes from her concern for healthy foods prepared safely without the use of Teflon, aluminum pans, or aluminum foil. In addition to the flameware, Maryon is making shushi platters and presentation trays from stoneware.
As an artist, a former director of a craft center, and an environmental activist, Maryon has been influenced by many traditions of the past as well as the working craftspersons of present and recent generations. One of those, Mary Caroline Richards, has been a touchstone for her creative path.
"There is an essential connection between artistic activity and human nature, between art and nature and universe and human being." -Mary Caroline Richards
Maryon is also producing ceramic tiles depicting a variety of motifs. Her special areas of interest are in animals, leaves and flowers, and religious subjects. She works and fires with her partner Robbie Lobell, a studio potter. They live and work on Atthewood Farm with their dog Arlo and three Poitou donkeys: Nova, Olympia, and Rhapsodie.
